GTA 6 Online: not announced — and what the past two launches say about the wait

Rockstar has confirmed nothing about GTA 6 multiplayer. Here is the confirmed part, the timeline GTA Online and Red Dead Online actually followed, and why progress almost certainly will not carry over.

Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6. No name, no date, no structure, no word on whether anything carries over from GTA Online. That is the honest state of it on 3 September 2026, and anyone telling you otherwise is describing a rumour.

What can be done usefully is to look at how Rockstar actually shipped its last two online modes, because both followed the same shape.

How Rockstar's online modes actually launched

GameGame releaseOnline modeGap
GTA IV29 April 2008Multiplayer included at launchNone
GTA V17 September 2013GTA Online, 1 October 201314 days
Red Dead Redemption 226 October 2018Red Dead Online beta, 27 November 2018~1 month

The pattern for the modern, separate online component is a deliberate gap of two to six weeks, and in both cases the launch was rough: GTA Online was effectively unplayable for its first week, and Red Dead Online opened as a staged beta by edition. Expect the same shape — a delayed opening and a bumpy first week — rather than a smooth day-one experience.

On leaked online mechanics

Videos titled "GTA 6 Online mechanics leaked" are invented. Nothing about session sizes, role systems or progression has come from Rockstar. We mark that kind of material as rumour and do not publish it as fact.

What is confirmed

  • GTA Online for GTA 5 continues to be supported. Updates keep coming, and no shutdown date has been announced.
  • Nothing has been said about carrying over progress, money or vehicles.
  • There is no date and no content detail for GTA 6 multiplayer.

Every one of those lines, with the date we last verified it, is on the status board.

What is reasonable to expect, and why

  1. A launch after the single-player release

Two precedents out of two. Servers for a game of this scale are stress-tested by the actual audience, and Rockstar has twice chosen to stagger that load away from launch day.

  2. A fresh economy, not an import

Ten years of GTA Online inflation dropped into a new game would flatten its progression instantly. Every studio in this position has chosen the reset.

  3. Co-op jobs at the centre

Heists were the most durable format in GTA Online and the one that kept players returning for a decade.

  4. Seasonal content drops

The update model makes money and is not going anywhere.

Everything in that list is inference from Rockstar's history, not information from Rockstar.

What to do before launch

  • Check your subscription expiry date now. Console multiplayer needs PS Plus or Game Pass Core, and renewing at 3am on launch night is how people miss the first evening.
  • Line up a crew. Co-op content in GTA is easier and more profitable with a regular group, and the first weeks are when everyone is online at once.
  • Ignore anything selling in-game currency in advance. Before an announcement, every such offer is a scam.

Reasonable expectations in more depth are in the GTA 6 Online guide, and the practical pre-launch list — storage, subscription, day-one patch — is in the launch day checklist. We will update this page the day Rockstar says anything at all.

Frequently asked questions

Will GTA 6 have an online mode?

Almost certainly, but it has not been announced. Rockstar has said nothing about the multiplayer component of GTA 6 — no name, no date, no structure.

When will GTA 6 Online launch?

No date exists. Both precedents point to a gap rather than a same-day launch: GTA Online opened on 1 October 2013, fourteen days after GTA 5, and Red Dead Online started in beta on 27 November 2018, about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2.

Will my GTA Online money and cars transfer to GTA 6?

Nothing has been announced, and it is unlikely. The GTA Online economy took more than a decade to inflate; importing it would break a new game's balance on day one. Plan on starting fresh.

Is GTA Online shutting down?

No shutdown has been announced. Rockstar continues to update GTA Online for GTA 5 and has said it is not walking away from that community.

Do I need PS Plus or Game Pass to play GTA 6 online?

On consoles, yes — online play requires an active subscription, exactly as it does in GTA Online today. Renewing it on launch day is a bad plan; queues and payment issues happen precisely then.

Will GTA 6 Online cost extra?

Not announced. GTA Online was included with GTA 5 at no extra cost and monetised through in-game currency afterwards. That model has made too much money to abandon.
