GTA 6 launch day checklist: what to do before release
Free up the right amount of storage, set up pre-load, dodge spoilers and check your hardware, so day one is about playing instead of downloading.

Launch day for a big game always plays out the same way: overloaded servers, a mandatory day-one patch and an SSD that turns out to be full. This checklist removes most of that.
Free up storage, turn on automatic updates, set your console to download in rest mode, and mute the friends who will absolutely post spoilers.
How much storage does GTA 6 need?
No official figure has been announced. As a reference point, GTA 5 with its online content passes 100 GB on current consoles, and Rockstar worlds only get bigger. Planning for 150–200 GB of free space is the sensible move.
- Check what you actually have free
On PS5: Settings → Storage. On Xbox Series: Settings → System → Storage.
- Remove what you do not play
Anything from a subscription service can be deleted and reinstalled later — cloud saves stay where they are.
- Consider an external drive
Current-gen games cannot run from a USB drive, but parking them there and moving them back is far faster than downloading again.
Setting up pre-load
Pre-load usually opens 24–48 hours before release and only for digital pre-orders. To make sure it goes through without drama:
- turn on automatic downloads and updates in your console settings;
- allow downloads in rest mode and disable any auto-shutdown timer;
- if your connection is unstable, move the console closer to the router or run a cable.
Staying away from spoilers
The GTA 6 story will leak within hours of launch. Ahead of time:
- turn off notifications from gaming communities and Reddit;
- mute keywords on social platforms;
- on this site every guide with story details sits behind a spoiler gate, and the guide catalogue has a checkbox that hides them entirely.
