GTA 6 pre-orders and sales: no numbers published, and the records it has to beat
Rockstar has not released pre-order figures. Here is what the series actually did: GTA 5 sold 11.21 million copies in 24 hours and passed $1 billion in three days — and has now sold about 230 million.

The short answer
- GTA 6 pre-order numbers
- Not publishedNeither Rockstar nor the storefronts release pre-order counts
- GTA 5, first 24 hours
- 11.21 million copies, $815.7 millionAnnounced by Take-Two in September 2013
- GTA 5, first three days
- Over $1 billionThe fastest entertainment product to that mark at the time
- GTA 5, total to date
- About 230 million copiesStated by Take-Two on its earnings call, May 2026
- GTA franchise, total
- Over 440 million copiesTake-Two figure, across all titles
Rockstar has not published a single pre-order number for GTA 6, and it is unlikely to before launch. Storefronts do not release those figures either. Any post claiming "X million pre-orders" is making it up.
What can be measured is what the series did before, because those numbers came from Take-Two directly and set the bar this launch is measured against.
The records GTA 6 is being measured against
| Milestone | GTA 5 result |
|---|---|
| First 24 hours | 11.21 million copies, $815.7 million revenue |
| First three days | Over $1 billion in revenue |
| Total to date | About 230 million copies |
| Franchise total | Over 440 million copies |
For context on the last line: GTA 5 is the second best-selling game ever released, and it was still selling millions of copies per quarter in 2026, thirteen years after launch. That long tail — not the opening weekend — is what makes the franchise unusual.
Why GTA 6's day one will not be directly comparable
Three things changed since 2013, and all of them push in the same direction:
- A higher price per copy
GTA 5 launched at $59.99. GTA 6 launches at $79.99 standard and $99.99 Ultimate. Revenue records are easier to beat than unit records.
- A digital-first market
In 2013 most copies were discs. Today the majority are downloads, and the physical edition is a download code in a box anyway — which makes shipment figures and sales figures much closer together.
- A bigger install base, on fewer platforms
GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 at the end of their life. GTA 6 launches only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — a smaller platform list, but a far larger and more active audience per platform.
Take-Two has historically announced opening-week figures within days of launch and reports totals each quarter. Expect the first hard numbers in late November 2026, and a fuller picture at the following earnings call.
What this has to do with you
- The launch will be crowded. Servers, stores and downloads all peak at once — the practical preparation list is in the launch day checklist.
- Nothing sells out. A digital pre-order cannot run out, and the boxed version is a code, so panic-buying has no purpose. Details in the price and editions breakdown.
The other half of the business question — what the game cost to make — is in how much did GTA 6 cost to make. Confirmed facts with their last-checked dates live on the status board.
Frequently asked questions
How many pre-orders does GTA 6 have?
Nobody outside Rockstar and the storefronts knows. Pre-order counts are not published by Rockstar, PlayStation, Xbox or retailers, and any specific number circulating today is invented.
How many copies did GTA 5 sell on day one?
11.21 million copies in the first 24 hours, worth $815.7 million, per Take-Two's own announcement in September 2013. It passed $1 billion in revenue within three days.
How many copies has GTA 5 sold in total?
About 230 million, as stated by Take-Two on its earnings call in May 2026 — roughly thirteen years after release, and still selling millions per quarter.
How many copies will GTA 6 sell?
No one knows, and any forecast is an estimate. The useful reference points are that GTA 5 sold 11.21 million on day one at a lower price, and that GTA 6 launches at $79.99 into a much larger console install base.
Does pre-ordering get me anything extra?
The Ultimate Edition at $99.99 includes cosmetic items and in-game bonuses; the standard edition at $79.99 does not carry a pre-order-only bonus that Rockstar has announced. Pre-ordering mainly locks the price and, for the boxed version, a copy on the shelf.
Will GTA 6 break the record for the fastest-selling entertainment product?
It is the obvious candidate, but that is a prediction, not a fact. We will publish the actual figures once Take-Two announces them, which historically happens within a week of launch.
